Fermi Estimation Competition: EA Amsterdam Social

Join us for a fun and social evening of sharpening your intuition through a Fermi estimation and calibration competition!

In small teams, we'll tackle Fermi estimation questions: rough, order-of-magnitude calculations of quantities that seem impossible to guess at first glance (e.g., How many piano tuners are there in Amsterdam?).

Fermi estimates are powerful because they train us to break complex, uncertain problems into manageable steps, improve our calibration, and make better judgments even with limited information, an useful skill for anyone who cares about doing good effectively.

We'll compete in teams, discussing and defending our reasoning without using the internet (but calculators are fair game). Pens and paper will be provided. After the competition, we'll head to CREA for drinks to celebrate!

🕑 Schedule:

  • 18:00 Walk-in and welcome

  • 18:15 Start of the calibration and Fermi estimation game

  • 19:15 Drinks at CREA Café (5 min walk)

  • 20:00 Official end of the event (feel free to stay longer!)

📍 Location:
We'll meet at the University of Amsterdam’s Roeterseiland campus, in Building ABC. We'll reserve a room and let you know which one a few days before the event.

👥 Additional Notes:

  • Come solo or with friends, we'll form teams at the event.

  • No prior knowledge needed, just curiosity and a willingness to think out loud!

  • Small prizes (and eternal glory) for the best-calibrated team.

Questions? Feel free to reach out to Stef at +316 48918638

We look forward to seeing you there!
